In the United States, a woman's lifetime risk for breast cancer is one in eight. Of these women, less than 20% will enroll in clinical trials. Clinical trials represent an important option in the overall management of women with breast cancer. By participating in Clinical Trials, patients may gain access to innovative leading edge therapies, and are able to contribute to the advancement of breast cancer research. In this section, you will be able to find a brief description of selected protocols currently underway at the Arizona Cancer Center.
Coverage for Clinical Trials
As of April 2000, the Arizona legislature signed a bill that provides access to cancer clinical
trials. This means that health insurance will cover costs related to participation in a clinical
trial. All clinical trials are included in this bill, phase I, II, III, and IV. This is wonderful news
for cancer patients and their families as it increases their treatment options.

National Coverage Decision
In July 1999, in accordance with President Clinton's memorandum ordering Medicare coverage of routine
patient costs , in Health Care Financing Administration established a new policy which reimburses
for "all items and services that are otherwise generally availably to Medicare beneficiaries
(e.g., hospital services, physician services, diagnostic tests) that are provided in a clinical trial".
