Gemzar (Gemcitabine)

What It Is
Gemzar is used in chemotherapy to treat cancer.

What It Looks Like
A nearly-clear liquid

How It’s Given
Gemzar is injected directly into the vein by a doctor or nurse. The treatment takes at least half an hour, and is given once a week until therapy is stopped.

Common Side Effects
Low white blood cell count (neutropenia; this
     poses a greter risk of infection)
Low red blood cell count (anemia; symptoms
     include pallor, fatigue, and difficulty
     breathing)
Low platelet count (thrombocytopenia; this
     causes bleeding and bruising)
Nausea and vomiting
Fever
Swelling
Rash
Flu-like symptoms (fever, chills, headache,
     muscle pain, weakness, lack of appetite)
Minor hair loss
Sore mouth

Other Possible Side Effects
Diarrhea
Constipation
Shortness of breath
Tingling sensation in the hands or feet

Special Instructions and Precautions
Be sure to tell your doctor if you are taking any other medications (including nonprescription drugs and vitamins). If you have any serious side effects, such as fever, rashes or stomach problems, report them to your doctor. During treatment, try to eat regular, well-balanced meals, drink plenty of liquids, and get enough rest.
