What It Is
Taxotere is a new medication used in chemotherapy to treat breast cancer.
What It Looks Like
A clear liquid
How Its Given
Taxotere is injected directly into the vein by a doctor or nurse. It is given for one hour
every three weeks.
Common Side Effects
Low white blood cell count (neutropenia;
this
poses a greater risk of infection)
Allergic reactions
Fluid retention (swelling in hand and feet, slight
weight gain)
Hair loss
Fatigue
Muscle pain
Rash
Odd sensations, such as numbness, tingling or
burning in hands and feet
Nail changes (i.e. color and strength of nails)
Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
Special Precautions and Instructions
To reduce dangerous side effects, follow your doctors instructions on taking
dexamethasone along with your taxotere treatment. Be sure to take dexamethasone on
schedule. In addition, be sure to tell your doctor if you are on any other medications
(including nonprescription drugs and vitamins) or if you have any allergies. During
treatment, try to eat regular, well-balanced meals, drink plenty of liquids, and get
enough rest. Be sure to tell your doctor if you experience any serious side effects, such
as allergic reactions.
